Two Lady Spartans teams elected to Grundy Center Sports Hall of Fame
The Grundy Center Sports Hall of Fame announced the election of two new teams to be inducted during Felix Grundy Days festivities this summer.
The teams elected are the 2005 Class 2A state champion Lady Spartans basketball team and the 1935 girls basketball team which finished 3rd in the state basketball tournament and the last Lady Spartans team before the sport was dropped.
The 2005 Lady Spartans carried the No. 1 ranking in Class 2A for nearly the entire season after finishing State runner-up in 2004. Under Coach Al Jones, the Lady Spartans claimed the state championship in a hard-fought 54-51 battle in the finals with the No. 2 ranked and undefeated Tri-Center Neola. The Lady Spartans also defeated previously undefeated Cherokee in the semi-finals with an overtime 66-63 victory.
The 1935 Lady Spartans followed up on a state appearance in 1934 and put together the most outstanding season in the school’s history to that date of 12-4. This accomplishment was highlighted by four games against defending state champion Wellsburg. The Lady Spartans lost two close games to them in the regular season, but beat Wellsburg in the District finals and again at State in the consolation finals to finish 3rd place. The following season, the sport was unexpectedly dropped from the school’s activities.
The Hall of Fame will also announce the election of several individual athletes in the very near future.
Both team and individual honorees will be officially inducted during the Hall of Fame’s annual public ceremony at noon on Saturday, July 11th during Felix Grundy Festival activities.
A wall plaque commemorating each team will also be added at the high school “Wall of Fame” alongside previous individual inductees and the two teams previously inducted. Those teams were the 1984 state champion Spartan football team and the 1997 all-class state champion Lady Spartan golf team.
The Grundy Center Sports Hall of Fame was organized in 2004 by local athletic boosters. Its purpose is to recognize the contributions and accomplishments of athletes, coaches, administrators and contributors who have been involved in or supported the athletic programs of the community. Nominations for the Hall of Fame are welcome from the public and can be made through members of the committee.
