Boys basketball roundup: Sawyer, Spartans finish strong against Trojans

GRUNDY CENTER – Brayden Sawyer scored 16 points as the Spartans got away from South Tama late in a 45-37 win at Grundy Center High School on Monday, Jan. 20.

The winless Trojans led Grundy Center 30-27 after three quarters, but the Spartans dropped in 18 points in the final frame to secure the victory.

Sawyer scored his 16 on 5-of-12 shooting from the field, including 3-of-8 from long range. Sawyer also made three of the Spartans' 10 total made free throws in Monday's game.

BCLUW 62, COLO-NESCO 30: The Comets got out ahead and stayed ahead in a romp over the Royals last Monday.

BCLUW started with an 18-3 advantage after the first quarter and ended the first half with a 39-15 lead.

The win was the fourth in the last five games for the Comets, turning the corner after a 0-4 start to the season.

JANESVILLE 62, GLADBROOK-REINBECK 50: A slow start hurt the Rebels in the loss to Janesville last Monday.

G-R also struggled shooting the ball, 19-of-56 from the field and 1-of-22 from three-point range.

Tyler Tscherter scored 18 points with 10 rebounds to lead the Rebels in both categories. William Kiburis contributed 11 points, six rebounds and a team-leading seven assists.

Janesville led 16-9 after eight minutes and won every quarter the rest of the way. Wiley Sherburne scored 26 points for the Wildcats.

WAPSIE VALLEY 57, DIKE-NEW HARTFORD 42: Struggles continued for the Wolverines in a loss at Fairbank last Monday night.

The Warriors outscored D-NH 23-8 in the second quarter to take a 31-14 halftime lead. The Wolverines took their third loss in a row after a 10-0 start to the season.

Dane Fuller led the Wolverines with 12 points, Nathan Moore added nine points and Derek Kinney scored seven points with five rebounds. D-NH shot 34.8 percent from the floor and committed 17 turnovers.

Wapsie Valley avenged a 69-61 loss to Dike-New Hartford on Dec. 10 in Dike.
