Tuesday's girls basketball roundup: H-D-CAL rallies past Cougars

ACKLEY – Hampton-Dumont-CAL won a back-and-forth matchup with AGWSR, 56-53, at AGWSR High School on Tuesday, Dec. 1.
AGWSR's Alyssa Hames had 24 points and 10 rebounds for the home team; MaKenna Kuper chipped in 12 points. Grace Finger finished with eight points, five rebounds and seven assists.
Avery Hanson and Lauren Meader accounted for 50 of Class 3A No. 14 H-D-CAL's 56 points, with Hanson scoring 30 and Meader pouring in 20 points.
H-D-CAL (1-0) led 29-27 at halftime, but AGWSR (1-1) charged to a 40-37 lead after three quarters and led by as many as five, 44-39, with six and a half minutes left in the game.
D-NH knocks down third-ranked Denver / The Dike-New Hartford girls basketball team kicked off the season with a convincing 56-31 victory over third-ranked Denver at the Cyclone Center last Tuesday.
The Wolverines, ranked 14th at the time in Class 2A, have since jumped up to fifth place in the state.
Sophia Hoffmann led the Wolverines with 15 points on 7-of-14 shooting, and also paced D-NH with seven assists and six steals. Ellary Knock added nine pounts and six rebounds, Paula Gonzalez contributed eight points and seven rebounds; Payton Petersen led the rebounding effort with 10 boards coming off the bench.
D-NH led 17-6 after the first quarter and commanded a 34-11 halftime lead.
The game was a battle between two teams that qualified for state last season – D-NH a state semifinalist in 3A, Denver a state quarterfinalist in 2A.
The Cyclones committed 20 turnovers and were outrebounded by the Wolverines, 39-23.
