Girls soccer roundup: Dike-New Hartford falls to No. 1 Assumption

Needing to pick up a game after a previous opponent backed out, Dike-New Hartford scheduled a regular-season matchup at top-ranked Davenport Assumption.

The juggernaut Knights backed up their ranking with a 3-0 shutout of the Wolverines at Assumption High School on Friday, May 6.

It was the first loss of the season for third-ranked D-NH. Jade Jackson, Dru Dorsey and Lyvia Hulsbrink scored the goals for the Knights, who have won five state titles in a row.

In another battle of highly-ranked teams earlier in the week, D-NH defeated Hudson 6-3 in New Hartford on May 2.

The Wolverines led 5-0 at halftime against the Pirates, ranked seventh in 1A. Sophia Hoffmann and Camille Landphair both scored two goals and Becca Jorgensen and Gentry Swarts added a goal each. Two assists came from Landphair; Hoffmann, Ana Bering and Swarts all had an assist each.

GC/G-R plays .500 ball as regular season nears end

Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck traded wins and losses over the last seven days.

Columbus defeated GC/G-R in penalty kicks on May 4, GC/G-R followed with a 4-1 win over Anamosa and a 5-0 loss to Vinton-Shellsburg at the Vikings’ tournament on May 7. Finally, GC/G-R fought off Marshalltown 4-3 on May 9 in Reinbeck.

GC/G-R moved to 7-7 overall and had rematches with Columbus and D-NH on the docket for the final week of the regular season before next week’s regional opener with Clear Lake.

Mahayla Olson and Alex Yoder scored two goals each in the win over Marshalltown. Alex Yoder and Brooklyn Yoder had an assist each. Meaghan Martens and Mallory Wrage split time in net, recording two saves each.

In Saturday’s win versus Anamosa, Mahayla Olson scored a hat trick and Karlie Rickert added a goal. Katie Clark, Brooklyn Yoder, Braelynn Morgan and Rickert all assisted on one goal each.

Olson had the only goal in regulation against Columbus on an assist from Rickert. The Sailors won 3-1 in the PK shootout.
