ELECTION 2024 - Grundy County voters favor Donald Trump in 2024 presidential race
GRUNDY CENTER – Grundy County voters came out strongly in favor of Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race.
Unofficial totals announced Tuesday night by the Iowa Secretary of State’s office showed the Republican winning Grundy County by a more than 2-to-1 margin over Democrat Kamala Harris, 4,996 – 2,016. Five other candidates were on the ballot, though none received more than 85 votes.
Trump’s win in Grundy County was part of a statewide trend, as major news organizations projected him to win the Hawkeye state. Nationwide presidential results were too close to call as The Grundy Register went to press. Results will be updated at www.thegrundyregister.com as they become available.
Grundy County voters also came out strongly for Congresswoman Ashley Hinson as she successfully sought reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives in Iowa’s Fourth Congressional District. The Republican secured 5,194 votes in Grundy County compared to 1,719 for her primary challenger, Democrat Sarah Corkery. Independent Jody Madlom Puffett received just 53 votes in Grundy County.
Republican Joshua Meggers won a second term representing Iowa House District 54, garnering 98,7 percent of the vote in an uncontested race.
Five county candidates ran uncontested for office and all were elected in landslides. Incumbent sheriff Kirk Dolleslager was reelected with 98.6 percent of the vote while incumbent District 3 Supervisor Vic Vandehaar garnered 97.7 percent of the vote. Alan Tscherter, who was appointed auditor in January, was elected to his first term in the position with 99.1 percent of the vote while newcomers L.J. Kopsa and Jeffrey Pabst were elected to their first terms on the County Board of Supervisors, with Kopsa garnering 96.8 percent of the vote in District 1 and Pabst 97.2 percent of the vote in District 5.
Absentee voters made up a large percentage of ballots cast, with the County Auditor’s office reporting 2,446 absentee votes cast, representing 26.8 percent of the county’s 9,134 registered voters.
All results are preliminary and unofficial. Official results will be released once they are canvassed by the Grundy County Board of Supervisors next week.
