GRUNDY CENTER – On Sunday night, over 50 people gathered at the Grundy Center Fire Department for a retirement party that sent off three longtime volunteer firefighters with a combined 83 years of service.
Kevin Kuester, who was a member of the department for 45 years; Dan Huffman, who was a member for 26 years; and Jessie Huisman, who was a member for 15 years, have each decided to retire from the department after a long history of service.
Grundy Center Fire Chief Nathan Kappel says that even though the department is losing three great men, he is thankful for everything they have done for the department and the community.
“Each of them have been strong leaders in the department, and all of them have been officers at one point or another, so even though we don’t want to lose them, we learned a lot from them,” Kappel said.
