ACKLEY – Mandy Willems and Aubrie Fisher scored in double figures as the AGWSR girls basketball team defeated Grundy Center, 46-38, in a battle of unbeaten teams on Friday.

Willems scored 19 points and Aubrie Fisher added 13 points with five rebounds and four assists for the Cougars. Ally Finger added 10 rebounds as AGWSR improved to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the North Iowa Cedar League West.

The Cougars never trailed and were tied briefly with the Spartans, 4-4, in the first quarter. A 16-9 AGWSR run that spanned the first 12 minutes of the game kept the Cougars ahead for the long haul.

"We knew it'd be a battle," AGWSR head coach Laurie Gann said. "[The Spartans] are very quick, athletic and physical and our little run to start the game was the icing that we needed to maintain."

The Spartans fell to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play. Hailey Wallis had nine points to lead the Spartans. Brooke Flater, Sarah Lindeman and Madide McMartin all scored six points each.

Alex Hames scored 19 points to lead a trio of AGWSR boys basketball scorers with double-digit points as the Cougars defeated Grundy Center 62-49 in Ackley on Friday.

Luke Starr contributed 18 points and a team-leading seven rebounds and Tanner Weichers came off the bench to score 10 points.

AGWSR improved to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the NICL West, putting together back-to-back conference wins after a win over BCLUW on Tuesday.

"We got through a tough stretch there and came together as a team," AGWSR head coach Russ Banzhaf said. "We had a lot of inexperienced guys coming into this season and now we're playing more as a team and that's been the key these last two ballgames. Offensively, we're making the extra pass and starting to find out everybody's roles."

The closest the game got on Friday was a 2-2 tie in the early moments. AGWSR rattled off an 8-2 run to start the game and outscored the Spartans 15-7 to start the second half.

Starr caught fire in that second half, scoring 10 points in the third quarter alone.
