AGWSR softball qualifies for 1A state tourney

ACKLEY – The AGWSR softball team jumped on Fort Dodge St. Edmond early, scoring a 9-0 triumph over the Gaels to qualify for the Class 1A state softball tournament starting next week in Fort Dodge.

The Cougars will be the No. 3 seed in the tournament and will play Janesville in a state quarterfinal at 1:30 p.m. Monday.

This is the first appearance for AGWSR at the state level since winning it all in 2015.

Taylor Sperfslage and MaKenna Kuper each hit home runs for AGWSR, with Sperfslage's bomb capping a five-run first inning and Kuper launching a sixth-inning blast for her ninth home run of the season.

That was more than enough run support for the Cougars' ace, Taryan Barrick, who pitched a no-hitter, striking out 15 with one walk.
