BCLUW board to appoint replacement member

After six years of service, BCLUW school board member Shannan Callaway officially announced her resignation effective October 20 due to a move outside of the district during Monday night’s regular meeting.

Callaway, a Comet alumni, will reside in the GMG district but plans to open enroll her two children into the BCLUW schools. Superintendent Ben Petty presented her with a thank you note and a lifetime activity pass as a note of thanks for her efforts.

“It has been a great privilege to serve on the BCLUW school board, and I am very proud of all that we have accomplished in the past six years,” Callaway wrote in her resignation letter. “I have no doubt that the board will continue to build upon these successes in the future.”

Now, the board must look forward and appoint a new member to fill the vacancy. Petty indicated that he hopes to have a replacement arranged by November 20, and residents are allowed to petition for a special election if they collect enough signatures. After the low voter turnout in September, however, such a scenario seems unlikely.
