BCLUW girls win season opener

CONRAD – On a big night for BCLUW's past and present athletes, Madison Ubben and Lauren Anderson came up with the biggest nights of all.

The BCLUW girls basketball team defeated Baxter 54-44 in Conrad on Friday, with Ubben (21 points) and Lauren Anderson (16) each setting career-high single-game point totals.

Anderson added 16 rebounds, five assists, five steals and five blocked shots with Ubben contributing seven rebounds, four assists and a block.

"It's a good start with the win," Ubben, a sophomore, said. "We just need to keep working hard and work on our defensive pressure and we are all set."

BCLUW jumped out to a 20-12 lead midway through the first quarter before the Bolts rallied for nine consecutive points and the Comets had to salvage a 22-21 halftime lead on a pair of Bailey Ashton free throws after a foul as time expired.

"We got out-hustled in that second quarter horribly," BCLUW coach Dave Lee said. "We'd get the rebound or the touch and then we wouldn't go get the ball, but we can clean that up."

The second half was much kinder to the Comets.

BCLUW had an 8-2 run to provide a bit of a cushion as Baxter played behind for most of the quarter and had the Comets shooting bonus free throws with less than 3 minutes left in the third quarter.
