BCLUW softball defeats Grundy Center 1-0 (PHOTOS)

GRUNDY CENTER – Megan Yantis doesn't want the BCLUW softball team to get caught flat-footed on a day where one run might not be enough.

As it turned out, the Comets head coach admitted a win was a win as BCLUW claimed a 1-0 victory against Grundy Center, the second-consecutive game where the Comets, ranked fifth in Class 1A, had won an NICL West matchup with a single run after Monday's 1-0 win at home against West Marshall.

"We hit the ball alright, and we mostly hit it right at them," Yantis said. "We had runners on when we needed to, we had the right runners on, our fast runners, but we just couldn't get them around. … Our defense stepped it up but one of these days, 1-0 isn't going to be enough and we need to figure out how to execute and score a few more runs."

The only run came in the top of the first inning, when Olivia Hughes reached on an infield error, advanced to third on a Kiersten Kruse single and finally came home on a wild pitch.

After that, BCLUW left a total of six runners on in the next six innings, with Grundy Center stranding nine, including having the bases loaded in the sixth and having two runners on in the seventh.
