CONRAD – BCLUW softball carried the confidence of recent victories into Tuesday's matchup with last year's Class 1A champions from Collins-Maxwell.

The Spartans got the 4-0 win at the BCLUW softball field, but the Comets got some valuable experience facing a team that returns plenty from the state title run and is currently ranked first in Class 1A.

BCLUW only managed two hits off Spartans ace Mikayla Houge, but the 13th-ranked Comets were still as close as 1-0 until the seventh inning.

"I knew the girls were ready to play and I knew this would be a tough game," said BCLUW coach Megan Yantis. "To stay within a run into the seventh, I feel like that's definitely an accomplishment against a good ballclub."

Collins-Maxwell tacked on three runs in the seventh with a Houge single that plated Alexis Houge, a Hannah Caple sacrifice fly scoring Emma Kahler and a subsequent error that scored Mikayla Houge's courtesy runner.
