BCLUW will name softball field after Lee

After a few months of discussions and some trepidation about moving forward without a concrete policy in place, the BCLUW board of education voted unanimously to name the district’s high school softball field after legendary coach Dave Lee during Monday morning’s regular meeting.

Superintendent Ben Petty told the board that of the correspondence he has received in the time since the idea was brought back under consideration, all of it was positive. Previous boards have also contemplated the change but did not take official action, and the district has never had a concrete policy on the qualifications for naming a venue after a former athlete or coach.

“No matter what you do, it’s subjective. It’s never cut and dry,” Petty said.

Board members LJ Kopsa and Brian Feldpausch suggested devising a policy for future reference to avoid “over-naming” or making a rash decision that could reflect poorly on BCLUW in retrospect.

“I haven’t heard any bad ideas, but without a policy in place, you’re opened up to the whim of the public,” Kopsa said. “And maybe you get a bad whim from the public, and you’re made to be the bad guy because you didn’t have a policy in place.”

Fellow board member Lynne Kock spoke in favor of the proposal and argued that Lee’s pedigree—which includes back-to-back state titles and five state tournament appearances over four decades—is unparalleled in Comet athletics.
