ACKLEY –The one-two punch of Grundy Center post players Kylie Willis and Brooke Flater combined for 36 points as the No. 1 in Class 2A Spartan girls continued their perfect marks with a 64-46 win over the AGWSR girls’ basketball team here Friday during North Iowa Cedar League West Conference play.

The Spartans climbed to 15-0 overall and a league-leading 10-0 with the sweep of the ninth-ranked in Class 1A Cougars. Grundy Center won the first meeting 49-34 back in mid-December.

Willis scored a game-high 21 points with seven field goals and a 7-of-9 effort at the charity stripe. Flater, despite two early fouls, had 15 points.

The Cougars had the home crowd thinking upset bid early, scoring the final nine points of the first quarter for a 15-9 advantage. Aubrie Fisher drilled back-to-back three-point goals for six of her team-high 14 points in the run.

The Spartans regrouped at the quarter break and outscored AGWSR, 25-7 in the second period for a 34-22 halftime lead. Grundy uncorked a 16-1 run to start the second as Flater scored four straight baskets around Sydney Mathews and Maddie McMartin three-balls.

“It was a case of us seeing what they (AGWSR) were doing and then us executing what we could do against them. We didn’t do that early, but that is the nice thing with this group that they can adjust well. I can’t say enough about our bigs, they did a nice job of working inside,” said Grundy Center head coach Matt Lindeman.
