Blanketed in love: GC fourth graders donate quilts to Creekside Cottages, Arlington Place

Every month, fourth grade students at Grundy Center Elementary make a visit to Arlington Place and Creekside Cottages to visit, play games and do crafts with residents there. In December, students made their monthly visit extra special, when they handmade a blanket for each resident and delivered them to the residents themselves.

The two fourth grade teachers - Miranda Rekers and Tara Liston - say the fourth grade classes been doing the visits for years, as a fun way for students to connect with people in the community.

“The kids go once a month and play games and do crafts with the residents,” Liston said. “The residents love it as much as the kids, I think. At Arlington, each student has a resident who’s their partner, and every month they’re so excited to see each other. The kids are on a first name basis with their partners, and some of them even call them their ‘grandma.’”

During the month of December, students decided to do something extra special for their friends at Arlington Place and Creekside Cottages.
