Building a healthy community: GC Wellness Committee leads community garden revival efforts

A group of dedicated volunteers and members of the local Wellness Committee are leading the efforts to revive the Community Garden, and spark a series of health and wellness initiatives in town.

Partnering with the Healthy Hometowns initiative powered by Wellmark, the local Wellness Committee has been hard at work on brainstorming ways to make Grundy Center a healthier place. Some of their goals include making the town more walkable by improving the sidewalk system, making it more bicycle-friendly by adding bike lanes and giving the community access to fresh, local produce with the help of the community garden.

Local Wellness Committee member Crystal Petersen - who is also a dietician at GCMH - says participation has been low at the garden in the last year or so, which sparked the committee to undertake a community garden revival as one of their health and wellness goals.

“We started working with Wellmark on the Healthy Hometowns initiative, and they’ve been helping us form goals and action plans on how we can improve health and wellness in town,” she said. “One of our big undertakings is the community garden revival.”
