GRUNDY COUNTY - Over 100 classic car enthusiasts from all over the area filled the parking lot at The Mill Convenience Store in rural Grundy County last Tuesday, as spectators perused through row after row of shining chrome to check out the one-of-akind rides.
The Mill hosts a Cruise Night in their parking lot on the second Tuesday of each month from April through September, where anyone can come display their car, and swap stories with other car enthusiasts from Grundy, Butler, Black Hawk County and beyond.
Jerry Steward of Cedar Falls was one of the many area locals who displayed his car - a 1953 Chevy - at the Cruise Night on Tuesday.
“My first car was a 1953 Chevy, and when this came for sale a few years back, I had to have it,” he said.
Steward has several classic cars, which he works on as a hobby. He and his wife take the cars on classic car cruises all over the country; right now, he’s planning a trip for their 60th wedding anniversary that will take them 3,000 miles all around the U.S., all in his 1957 Mercury.
“Riding cross country is much more fun in an old car,” Steward says.
Another local, Dennis Rindels of Dike, was there with his 1968 Plymouth Barracuda.
“I bought my first Barracuda back in 1968,” he said. “That same engine is in this car now.”
Rindels said cars were an important part of his life growing up, and he reminisced on the days of racing around and goofing off.
“We used to have a blast,” he said. “There’s a lot of good memories in old cars.”
