Conrad council frustrated with fire station contractor

As days and weeks have turned into months without substantial progress toward final completion at the new Conrad fire station, Mayor Jeff Martin and city council members had harsh words for Brycon Construction and owner Wes Bryngelson during last Thursday night’s regular meeting.

“Another six months is unacceptable. We’ve waited long enough,” Martin said, in reference to a request for an extension on the contract. “We’re not going to be put on the backburner for another project.”

Local native and current Conrad firefighter Jordan Hoy, who is now employed with the architectural firm ISG, spoke to the council and promised to serve as a vigilant watchdog throughout the rest of the process. He and Bryngelson are set to meet on Friday in hopes of devising a schedule for the remaining items, which include re-pouring concrete, HVAC and gas supply, among others.

“I’m going to come up with (the schedule) myself, and he’s going to agree to it,” Hoy said. “I will be there on every pour that he does, and I will work with him on staging the trucks… I just want you guys to know that I will definitely see this project through to the end.”

Councilman Todd Schnathorst accused Bryngelson of “multiple lies,” and Martin noted that much of what’s left to do at the site is a direct result of “poor workmanship.” Originally, the punch list items were set to be completed by mid-June, but that deadline has since passed. At press time, a request for comment from Bryngelson had not been returned.
