Derek Coulter, a Beaman native and 2014 BCLUW High School graduate, has been named the Iowa State University College of Design’s student marshal for the upcoming December commencement ceremony.

The marshal is selected on the criteria of grade point average (GPA) and involvement in the school during his or her time there, and Coulter said he jumped at the opportunity when he received the invitation.

“It’s definitely an honor,” he said.

As an industrial design major, Coulter has learned all about designing almost any product that comes off of the manufacturing line, and he traces the interest back to his early days.

“Lego sets and stuff like that were always awesome to me, and I loved making things with my hands,” he said. “I found out that you could do it as a degree and a career path, so I fell in love with it.”
