GRUNDY CENTER – Conflicting reports have emerged about future plans for the proposed development of a four-plex apartment building on the former First Baptist Church property, with council members under the impression that the deal is off, while the developer maintains that they are not ‘pulling out’ but rather re-evaluating the scope of the project.
The project, which was proposed to the city by Echo Development Group out of Cedar Falls back in July, would see a four-plex apartment building constructed on the lot, with a garage for parking under each unit.
But since details on the project were released, the development has become somewhat of a source of contention, with nearby residents voicing opposition to the project, stating that they would prefer green space, a park, or smaller and less obtrusive housing.
Even among the council members, there has been disagreement on details of the development, which led to split votes that stalled rezoning efforts.
At the Grundy Center city council meeting on Monday night, Mayor Brian Buhrow announced that Echo Development had ‘pulled out’ of the project, sparking a discussion between council members on how to proceed next with the property.
