Dinsmore, Kramer perform at All-State Speech Festival

Two BCLUW seniors received the highest honor that an individual speech contestant can receive when they qualified for the All-State festival in Cedar Falls and performed on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa last Monday.

Anna Dinsmore read “Pretty” by Katie Makkai, a sober analysis of growing up, womanhood, beauty standards and fulfillment, in the Poetry category, and Summer Kramer read a modern “millennial” rendition of Homer’s classic “Odyssey,” complete with a dab, free Wi-Fi, pizza and snacks, in the Storytelling category.

“It’s about the future generations and how pretty is really just an irrelevant word to compliment someone with,” Dinsmore said of the poem she read. “We should be regarding people more over their intelligence, their creativity and just how amazing they are.”

To qualify for All-State, competitors must first receive a one rating at districts, then be chosen among the top five percentage of contestants at the state level.
