Eight Grundy County farms earn special designation at state fair

Grundy County has always been known for its soil and its agricultural tradition, and eight local operations were recognized with Century and Heritage Farm awards for 100 and 150 years, respectively, in the same family at the State Fair in Des Moines last month.

This year’s Century Farm honorees all hailed from the northern half of the county: The Bakkers (Curt, Jeff and Larry) and the Johnson-Hubergs (Gail, Lori Huberg-Mulder and Jody Huberg-Schipper) hail from Dike, and Ronald DeBoer is from rural Aplington. The farm of James and Brenda Everts is located south of Parkersburg, and the Jaspers farm in the northwest corner of the county has an Ackley address.

In all, 354 farms received the designation this year. The Century Farm program began in 1976, and more than 19,000 farms across the state have been recognized.
