EMS Strong: GC Ambulance Dept. observes National EMS Week

GRUNDY CENTER - This week, the Grundy Center EMS Department will join other emergency responders across the country in celebrating National EMS Week.

National EMS Week will run from Sunday, May 19 through Saturday, May 25, and is celebrated as a way to recognize and thank first responders for their service. The theme for this year is “EMS Strong Beyond the Call.”

Dwight Gliem, Grundy Center Ambulance Chief, says “EMS Strong” is about people coming together to help their community, and those who live in it.

“It’s all about working together to help the citizens in our community; that’s why we do what we do,” Gliem said. “People don’t see [emergency responders] because they’re having a good day - they see us because they’re at one of their worst moments, and it’s our job to help them, and get them through it. This is our way to give back to the community.”

Currently, the GC Ambulance Dept. has 19 volunteers, five part time employees and four full time employees. The department has at least one paramedic on duty 24/7 and oftentimes, two paramedics available. Last year, the dept. responded to over 1,000 calls for service - over twice the number of calls as they handled only a few years before.
