Engelkes, zoning administrator discuss home industry rules

GRUNDY CENTER — The question of rules for home businesses came before the Grundy County Supervisors Monday as Melanie Engelkes, owner of The Shabby Shack in Grundy Center, approached about possibly moving her business to the Yankee Farm, just outside the Grundy Center city limits.
Engelkes said she knows she needs a permit to put her business there, and came with questions about rules to run it as a home industry. County Zoning Administrator Carie Sager explained that the home industry permit is regulated by zoning rules.
“As long as the rules are complied with and there are no issues, there are no issues,” Sager said. “It’s run on a complaint basis.”
The home industry permit, which allows small businesses to be run in areas zoned for residential property, requires that a business “be fairly incidental and secondary to the residential property,” Sager said.
