Fire leaves HEM with over $1 million in damages

GRUNDY CENTER- The Heavy Equipment Manufacturing facility, located at 601 East First Street in Grundy Center, was left with well over $1 million in damages after a fire ripped through it on Saturday morning at approximately 9:00 A.M.

Firefighters from the Grundy Center and Holland departments were on the scene for about two and a half hours containing the blaze, and the cause is still undetermined as the State Fire Marshal’s Office continues its investigation. According to Grundy Center Fire Chief Jeff Latwesen, the fire was one of the biggest that his department has seen in recent memory.

“It’s been a while since we’ve had anything this size,” he said.
