FORT DODGE – Aubrie Fisher's got big aspirations for her senior year.

It's off to a good start, as the Iowa Falls-Alden/AGWSR cross country runner logged her best time at the state meet in her final race at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge, finishing seventh overall in 19:10 for her second medal in four tries.

"It feels good to go out the senior year with a bang," Fisher said. "My family and friends have been supportive over the years and it's so exciting."

Teammate Ellie Meyer, a student at IF-A, was 31st overall in 20:15, also improving from her 2017 performance.

Fisher's key to success, she said, was keeping Humboldt's Bryce Gidel in her sights.

In the end, Fisher had her beat by 11 seconds.

"I knew I could run with her," Fisher said. "We've been battling all season and I knew if I'd stay with her, she'd help me get in the top placing because she's that competitive, too. … Other than that, I just had to run my race and focus on myself, try not to focus on the outcome because that can mess with your mind."
