During the Grundy County Community Foundation Awards Ceremony earlier this month, the Grundy Center Ambulance Dept. was awarded $10,000, which will be used to help purchase a power load system for the department’s second ambulance.

The new power load system uses a hydraulic lift to lift patients into the ambulance, and has been shown to reduce back injuries by 80 percent.

GC Ambulance Chief Dwight Gliem says with calls continuing to rise, the new power load system will be a huge help to the department.

“This will make a huge difference for us; it eliminates a lot of risk of injury for the volunteers and EMS staff,” he said. “Especially when you’re in a rural area, you don’t always have multiple people to help at all times and you don’t want to wait around for help with loading. To add to that, we’ve been a lot busier lately and our calls are up, so with our other ambulance and crew out, if we have another call and have to take the second ambulance out, we need all the help we can get.”
