GRUNDY CENTER - In an effort to welcome visitors and highlight the town, the Grundy Center City Council has approved the purchase of three new welcome signs, which will be installed on the north, east and west sides of town to greet those coming into Grundy Center.
More than a year ago, the council voted to remove the aging, wooden signs that were previously located on the north and east edges of town while looking into replacing them with more modern, updated signs.
During their meeting on Monday night, the council approved a bid from Nagle Signs for three new welcome signs, for a total cost of $80,000 including installation, which would come out of the Community Betterment Fund that’s funded by the Local Option Sales Tax.
The signs will be stone and aluminum, and would be lit at night. If the council decides they would like an electronic message board added to the sign later on, that could be done for an additional cost down the road.
Council member Amanda Grineski said she thinks the signs are a great step for the city to show they’re invested in making Grundy Center a better place.
“We’ve had so many projects going on to improve Grundy Center, like the downtown facade project, and we’ve asked so many people to invest in us whether it’s volunteer time or financial commitments,” she said. “I think this is a great way for us to show them that we’re investing back into Grundy Center, too.”
City Clerk Kristy Sawyer said the city will need to finalize the location of each sign, and that the hope is that the new signs will be installed yet this fall.
