GC council discusses fireworks ordinance

GRUNDY CENTER – With the Fourth of July less than a month away, the Grundy Center City Council took a few minutes at Monday’s meeting to revisit their fireworks ordinance in light of changes to the state law regarding the use and sale of fireworks.
City Clerk Kristy Sawyer said the city received an inquiry about whether or not they plan to make any changes or restrictions to the use of fireworks within city limits.
“A lot of cities are leaving their codes the same for now,” Sawyer said. “Currently, our code says that a permit is needed in order to shoot any fireworks off within city limits.”
Mayor Brian Buhrow said unless the council scheduled a special meeting, they couldn’t make any changes to the ordinance before the Fourth of July, since the next council meeting isn’t until July 10. He suggested the council keep the same ordinance for now, and discuss any possible changes for the future at a later time.
“I would say keep it as is,” agreed council member Janetta Miller. “We do need to get some information out there, though, letting people know they need to apply for a permit if they want to do fireworks.”
