GRUNDY CENTER- The Grundy Center school board voted unanimously to move forward with a foodservice contract with Taher to begin at the outset of the 2020-2021 school year during last Wednesday night’s regular meeting.

Due to the retirement of shared Grundy Center and Aplington-Parkersburg foodservice director Kathryn Patrick, the district began exploring the possibilities of hiring an outside private company while keeping current employees on board and maintaining their IPERS benefits. Lunch will cost $2.38 per meal, and breakfast will cost $1.60. The service will still be shared with A-P.

“It’s a wonderful partnership, and we’re really looking forward to moving that process forward with your approval,” Superintendent Robert Hughes said.

The board voted unanimously to approve the plan. Later, the board discussed the facilities improvement plan and moved forward with a motion that will include $213,490 in spending for 2020-2021. It was noted that the secondary building currently has the most pressing infrastructure and drainage needs.

Later in the meeting, Hughes discussed the ongoing COVID-19 situation, how it has affected education and the district’s plans moving forward. He also thanked school board members for their continued commitment to education at Grundy Center.

“We have a new normal. If it’s face-to-face or distance learning, our staff has committed to the time and studies to prepare,” Hughes said.

Commencement has officially been rescheduled for June 20, although the district did hold a special ceremony last Friday for two students—Jesse Mackie and Sean Woodman—who are entering the military.

The board approved the Teacher Leadership Contracts for 2020-2021 at a total cost of $54,700.

IN OTHER BUSINESS, the board:

·      Approved the 2020-2021 technology plan, the 2020-2021 student teaching contract with Luther College, the 2020-2021 school fees and the district developed service delivery five-year plan for special education.

·      Approved a resolution to support Maroon and White Inc. and show interest in leasing space in the newly renovated Upper Elementary building.
