GRUNDY CENTER- With board members communicating via teleconferencing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Grundy Center school board approved its tax rate for the upcoming school year and the purchase of Chromebook laptops during its regular meeting last Wednesday night.

Although the published tax levy was $13.42 per $1,000 of valuation, the actual figure is closer to $13.36 due to a change from the state legislature. The Chromebooks came at a total cost $149,865.60 and will go to students in grade 6-12 as part of the take home program.

The board also voted 4-0 (Al Kiewiet abstained due to his affiliation with the city) to gift the upper elementary property to the city of Grundy Center and unanimously approved the school calendar for 2020-2021.

Superintendent Robert Hughes reported that applications for the foodservice director position and outside bids were due by the end of the month, and that process is still moving forward.

Hughes also praised students and staff for their efforts throughout the pandemic and staying strong through a trying time.

“We’re trying to help the community as much as we can, and from a community aspect, they’ve been wonderful offering support and help,” Hughes said. “I really can’t be happier with those that have stepped up to meet the challenge. As much as all of this has been a real trial to get through, it also has brought us together.”

IN OTHER BUSINESS, the board:

·      Approved a cooperative agreement with UNI for student teachers.
