GCMH earns 2nd "Critical Access" honor

GRUNDY CENTER – For the second consecutive year, Grundy County Memorial Hospital has earned a spot as a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital for 2022.

The list is compiled by the Chartis Center for Rural Health, and is based on the hospital meeting high standards in annual evaluations of rural hospitals based on their performance.

“Recognition as a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital is a reflection of our hospital’s overall commitment to excellence and I couldn’t be more proud of our team,” said hospital administrator, Adam Scherling, MHA.

The Chartis Center annually assesses the nation’s 1,350 critical access hospitals using eight measures that are referred to as the “Hospital Strength Index”.

Scherling said the analysis is comprehensive, including areas such as patient safety, patient satisfaction, quality outcomes, market share, and financial stability and efficiency.

“It’s clear that the Top 100 distinction identifies high performing organizations, and our hospital is very pleased to be recognized among these peers,” he added.

Scherling adds that among Iowa hospitals, 17 were recognized for the honor, including five other hospitals that are affiliated with UnityPoint Health.

“Even as the hospital responded to the challenges of a health crisis, our team has maintained excellence by achieving high quality and positive outcomes that outperformed many of our peers,” Scherling said. “It speaks to our hospital’s all-around high performance and operational efficiency.

According to the Chartis Center for Rural Health, hospitals recognized as a Top 100 had one of the one-hundred highest overall scores among hospitals nationally. GCMH was also named as a top performer in 2021.
