U.S. Senator Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), a New Hartford farmer who is now the longest serving Republican in the chamber, has been unanimously nominated to serve as the President Pro Tempore, a position typically bestowed upon the most senior member of the majority party in the Senate.

Grassley, who grew up on a Butler County farm and graduated from New Hartford High School in 1951, was first elected to the U.S. House in 1974 and won election to the Senate in 1980. During the most recent session, he served as the chairman of the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee, and in his new role, he will be third in the succession line to the President of the United States after the Vice President and the Speaker of the House. He also plans to chair the Finance Committee come 2019.

“My friends and neighbors in Butler County have trusted me to represent them for 56 years. It’s a great responsibility that has guided my work at all levels of government, and one that I will take with me as Senate President Pro Tempore beginning in January,” Grassley wrote in a prepared statement.
