Grundy Center baseball piles on BCLUW late (PHOTOS)

GRUNDY CENTER – The opportunity would be there for Grundy Center baseball, Pat Brown figured.

The Spartan head coach knows the extra workload his baseball players have taken on, and how that would eventually translate into a late-game offensive surge, scoring seven runs in the sixth inning to put Wednesday's NICL West matchup with BCLUW out of reach, 9-1, at the George Wilhelm Sports Complex.

Cale Hendricks led the Spartans with two RBI, both of those runs scoring on a fly ball that rolled to the wall and really burst the game open for the Spartans. Grundy Center also capitalized on some Comet errors and pitching miscues.

"It was pretty similar to our Ackley game the other night," Brown said. "We left a lot of guys out there and we did the same tonight, but I knew that when we'd have an opportunity to bust this game open that we were going to."

It was all in service of helping out Spartan starter Brayden Sawyer, as the freshman claimed victory with one run allowed on three hits, striking out five with two walks. Dayne Zinkula allowed one hit in an inning of scoreless relief.

"I was throwing strikes and my defense was really good behind me making the plays," Sawyer said.
