BELLE PLAINE – An early advantage for the Grundy Center football team carried the Spartans to a 29-12 victory at Belle Plaine to open the season.

Grundy Center starts the season 1-0, the first win for new head coach Travis Zajac. Belle Plaine fell to 1-1.

The Spartans led 14-0 at halftime after a pair of short-yardage touchdown runs from Logan Knaack. Grundy Center stretched the lead to 21-0 on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Knaack to Cale Hendricks before Belle Plaine finally got on the board with a 3-yard run by Luke DeMeulenaere later in the third quarter.

“We executed pretty well on offense,” Zajac said. “We were able to sustain some drives and take advantage of some short fields to get an early lead on Belle Plaine and get them out of their comfort zone. … We left some opportunities out there to put more points on the board, but the guys showed great growth from our scrimmage last week to the first game.”
