GRUNDY CENTER – Abby Hamann and the Grundy Center volleyball team have been trying to exert maximum effort in practice.

The Spartans entered the season as the 12th-ranked team in Class 2A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, but hard work is already paying off.

Grundy Center handled No. 4 Hudson in a straight-set victory for the finale of the Spartan Volleyball Invite at Grundy Center High School last Tuesday.

The Spartans won the four-team round-robin with a perfect 3-0 record, defeating AGWSR 21-10, 21-12 and besting West Branch 21-16, 21-16 before dispatching the Pirates 21-16, 21-19.

Hamann led the Spartans in kills (19) and digs (18) across all three matches. Emerson Kracht added 16 kills and 23 assists, sharing the setting load with Jacque Kuester who had 30 assists.

"We just make sure that we encourage each other," Hamann said. "We run the right free ball plays and make sure we know what hitters are on the opposite sides, and know what hits to play."
