Grundy County Fair wraps up five-day run

GRUNDY CENTER —Comfortable temperatures and the return of a popular grandstand show led to a year of growth for the Grundy County Fair.
The Fair dodged a Friday downpour to record what Fair Board President Ron Flater described as increased attendance for a second straight year.
“I think our number of attendees during the week was up,” he said. “Some of our events were very successful.”
Spurring the improvement was the return of the once-popular figure-8 races. Flater said the Fair Board elected to return the races to the way they had been before Grundy County became part of a circuit of specialized figure-8 drivers who attended various venues and put large amounts of money into their cars. He said the goal this year was to create a rules package where drivers could participate in the figure-8 races Thursday night and then come back two nights later with the same car and be part of the demolition derby.
“We wanted to take it back to where they could knock out the windows, move the gas tank forward and run,” he said.
