Heather Gutknecht is ready to help the Grundy Center girls golf team achieve its goals this spring.

A volunteer assistant coach for the last two seasons, Gutknecht has stepped into the head coaching role for the Spartans in place of Jocilyn Onnen.

"We have really great girls that are lifelong learners of the game," Gutknecht said. "I fell in love with coaching and working with these girls when I started helping out with the team and when the opportunity arose, I applied for it and was really excited to get it."

Grundy Center returns its top six golfers from a team that missed qualifying for state by eight strokes. The Spartans sent an individual qualifier, Frannie Brown, who finished 59th overall at the 1A meet at American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown.

Lauren Dirks, Josie Holke-Farnam, Jessica Ayers, Claire Verly and Lauren Buhrow also return from the six that golfed in the regional final in Nashua.

"One thing [Brown] said last year that really drove it home for us was that she said state wasn't that fun without her teammates," Gutknecht said. "The girls are coming into the season very driven, very focused."
