Hartman celebrates 30 years at Steckelberg Clinic

It’s rare in this day and age for anyone to stay at a job for five years, let alone 30. But Sally Hartman is still plugging along at the Steckelberg Veterinary Clinic in Conrad three decades later, and she was honored for the milestone with an open house event on Thursday afternoon.
           
“They’ve been very good to me. It’s been a good job, and I’ve enjoyed every aspect of the business,” she said.
           
One of the most interesting details of Hartman’s career is that by the time she’s done, she’ll have worked with three generations of Steckelbergs: Arvin, his son Kurt (the current head veterinarian) and Kurt’s son Joel as soon as he finishes school at Iowa State.
 
At the open house, Kurt joked that he wasn’t sure Hartman would stay long after she had to amputate a dog’s leg during her first day on the job. Back then, the business was about 15 percent small animals and 85 percent large animals, and today, it’s closer to 50-50.
