History was made in 2013

History was made. That would be the easiest way to describe the year in sports for Grundy County high schools. Each school made history in its own special way, from historic accomplishments at the state level to those at the local level.
2013 featured a team standing alone as the best ever in its sport and another possibly on its way to such a feat. It featured a local team dethroning an NICL West basketball power, and another establishing itself once again as the team others hope to dethrone.
There were team and individual accomplishments almost too numerous to list. Three district football titles, a pair of conference basketball and golf crowns, a softball title, two volleyball titles and a tennis championship. Individuals won nearly 50 all-state honors and individual conference accolades too numerous to count.
It was, indeed, a historic year.
The Grundy Register Top 10 Sports Stories are selected by Grundy Register Editor John Jensen based on observations throughout the season.

The Grundy Center girls’ golf team became the most successful in Iowa history late last spring with the 12th state championship in school history. The championship broke a tie with Dubuque Senior for most state titles ever.
GC won the tournament by battling to a two-shot victory over another of the state’s historically good teams, Bishop Garrigan.
