Hughes will be offered shared superintendent position

The school boards at Aplington-Parkersburg and Grundy Center interviewed two candidates for the shared superintendent position last Wednesday, and as this issue goes to press, separate meetings at both districts have been scheduled for this Wednesday, April 24, with a job offer for Rob Hughes and a 28E sharing agreement on the agenda.

The two finalists, Hughes and Rob Busch, toured the school facilities in the districts last Wednesday before a joint session with both boards that lasted nearly five hours. Hughes is the assistant Superintendent of the Fort Dodge Community School District, and Busch is the superintendent at Edgewood-Colesburg.

With the impending retirements of superintendents Jon Thompson and Neil Mullen, 2019-2020 will be the first year of sharing between A-P and Grundy Center. Between operational sharing incentives and the shared salary cost, each district is projected to save almost $75,000 annually through the new agreement. According to the Grundy Center agenda, Hughes will receive an annual salary of $163,000.

Out of “respect for the process,” Hughes declined to make further comments until the hiring had been finalized by both boards. A-P will meet at 7:30 on Wednesday evening.
