GRUNDY COUNTY – There’s a first time for everything, and last Wednesday, Grundy County Sheriff Rick Penning and Deputy Bill Jorgenson encountered one of those moments.
At about 3 p.m., Penning got a call from a panicked father-to-be. The man reported that his wife had gone into labor, and they were on their way to Covenant Hospital when his wife started to give birth. So he pulled over on the side of Highway 20, just east of the Dike exit, and called for help.
“I got a call from the husband who said that his wife was literally delivering a baby [on the side of the road],” Penning said. “He was talking to his wife, and I could hear her moaning in the background. Then he said ‘the head’s coming out.’”
Penning immediately dispatched the Dike ambulance, and paged any officers that might be in the area. Deputy Bill Jorgensen, who was on his way home from a shift, responded to the call. Hardin County Sheriff Dave McDaniel happened to be in the area as well, and also responded.
