Local preservation commission works to promote historic sites

The Grundy Center Historic Preservation Commission has big plans for the coming year, including an ongoing project to add signage that identifies and promotes local historic sites. The first project on their list is the Herbert Quick Schoolhouse at Orion Park.

“Our goal is to identify Grundy Center’s historical sites and promote their preservation through education and communication,” said Mary Doak, a member of the GC Historic Preservation Commission. “One of the things we want to focus on with the new year is a signage project that will identify different historic sites in town, and we want our first one to be the Herbert Quick Schoolhouse.  We want the sign to be educational and interpretive, and let people know about the history and significance of the site.”

Doak asked the council for their support in the signage project at Herbert Quick, and their approval of their goals and projects for 2019.

“Our hope is to have the sign installed by May of 2019 in time for National Historic Preservation Month,” she said. “After that, we want to look into other possible historic sites for signage, including the courthouse and historic residences.”
