Marie Gertrude Schafer was born on November 3, 1932 in Grundy Center, the daughter of Henry and Minnie (Siebrands) Schafer. She was raised and educated in the Grundy County school district, where she graduated from Grundy Center High School with the class of 1951.

Marie was a very hardworking woman but enjoyed every moment. She worked at Manly Drug Store for 14 years. She also dedicated 43 years of her life to being a CNA at the Grundy Memorial Hospital, also worked in radiology as a technician two or three days a week and she also volunteered every Friday.

On March 12, 1954 she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Kenneth Rhoads at the Bethany Reformed Church in Grundy Center. From this union the couple had two children: Lee and Donna. The couple were blessed to spend so many years together before Kenneth’s passing on December 7, 2007. Marie was a 75-year member at the Bethany Presbyterian Church and also a member of the Manly coffee club and hospital auxiliary.

Marie had a true passion for bowling, her love for the Lord, listening to all kinds of music, spending time with her once a month coffee girl, working and volunteering, but most importantly was the Love for her family and the joy she got from being with them.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Lee (Deb) Rhoads and Donna Rhoades; brother-in-law: Ed Ubben; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren with one on the way; four nieces and nephews and eight great-nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband: Kenneth; parents: Henry and Minnie Schafer; brother: Hilko; sister: Esther Ubben and one great-niece: Kevy Ubben.
