Mauer: County bridges in desperate need of repair

GRUNDY COUNTY — Grundy County Engineer Gary Mauer does not mince words when it comes to the condition of the county’s 325 bridges. They need work, and they need it now.
Mauer estimated that the average age of Grundy County’s bridges is around 50 years old, which is at the long end of their expected 40- to 50-year life cycle. And with tight funding, money to replace the bridges is getting harder and harder to find.
“We need more revenue,” he said. “That would be generated through road use tax, which would mean a gas tax increase.”
