Noteboom reflects on two decades as county treasurer

The ladies in the Grundy County Treasurer’s office spend so much time together that they’re afraid they may know too much about each other. But under their fearless leader, Brenda Noteboom, who recently celebrated her 20-year anniversary, they’ve become a family, and they’ve loved almost every minute of it.

“The people are good. You meet all kinds of people,” Noteboom said.

Noteboom, who grew up in Waverly and farms with her husband between Grundy Center and Morrison, was first elected to the treasurer position in 1998 in a competitive race against then-incumbent Sue Kitzman. Since then, she’s never faced a challenger, and she won re-election easily in 2018. After Sheriff Rick Penning, who is now in his 38th year, she’s the second longest tenured elected official in Grundy County.

“You kind of forget about that until you lose a couple of friends or a couple of good people that lost the election. Then it’s like, ‘Oh yeah, it really can happen,’” Noteboom said.

And Noteboom’s colleagues in the courthouse basement—Marta Anderson, Tracy Beenken, Marci Rouse and Carie Sager—have all been in their current jobs for at least 10 years. They’ve stuck it out through thick and thin, and they do everything they can to make sure that anyone who comes in for a driver’s license renewal or a registration walks out satisfied.
