MARSHALLTOWN – This year's Grundy Center girls golf team made good on one of their preseason goals and now many of the younger Spartans have a benchmark of what to aim for next spring.

Grundy Center placed fifth at the Class 1A state golf tournament at American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown last week.

The Spartans scored 382 in the first 18 holes, a round that had to be completed on Wednesday when storms cut play short on Tuesday afternoon. From there, Grundy Center went right into the second 18 holes, grinding out a 381 team score the second time around.

A couple of teams caught Grundy Center in the team standings on Wednesday after the Spartans sat in a tie for third after the first 18 holes, but the Spartans were still 16 strokes clear of sixth-place Iowa Valley and were ahead of their 18-hole average heading into the state meet.

Lauren Dirks led the Spartans with two rounds of 91, placing 15th as an individual. Frannie Brown was 24th overall with a two-day total of 190, taking a couple of strokes off her first 18-hole total along the way. Lauren Buhrow had a 198 total and Josie Holke-Farnam played her best golf yet at the state tournament as the final Spartan scorer, shooting a 98 on the first 18 and a personal-best 95 on the second 18.

"I'm really proud of this," said Holke-Farnam, one of two seniors that golfed in Marshalltown along with Jessica Ayers. "This is a really big accomplishment for all of us and I know all the juniors are hungry to come back next year and do even better."
