GRUNDY COUNTY - When 14-year-old Sidney Schafer of Wellsburg found out that she had earned the chance to represent Grundy County at the annual Governor’s Charity Steer Show at the Iowa State Fair, it was more than just a chance to showcase the county’s excellence in beef production; it was a way for her to give back and help others.

Every year since 1983, the Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Iowa Cattlemen's Association have joined forces with the Iowa Governor for the Governor's Charity Steer Show (GCSS). The show raises money for the Ronald McDonald Houses of Iowa, which are located in Des Moines, Iowa City and Sioux City. These facilities house the family members of seriously ill children being treated in area hospitals.

Since its inception in 1983, the Governor’s Charity Steer Show has generated over $3.5 million, or over 270,000 nights stays, in support of Iowa’s Ronald McDonald House chapters. During that same time, more than 44,237 Iowa families have been served.

Schafer said she’s dreamed of being a part of the show for a long time, and when she found out she was selected, it was a dream come true.

“I love showing cattle; it’s such a big part of my life,” she said. “I’ve been showing for four or five years, and since I started, I’ve been hoping to be get a steer into the [Governor’s Charity Steer] show.”
