Schuller honored for leadership at Main Street Iowa awards

A driving force in bringing the Main Street program to Grundy Center, longtime community member John Schuller, received a Main Street Iowa Leadership Award during a statewide awards ceremony held in Des Moines on Friday.

Each year, Main Street Leadership Awards are presented to individuals from Iowa’s Main Street communities who demonstrate inspirational leadership and have made significant contributions to the local program’s downtown revitalization mission.

Aside from helping Grundy Center to achieve a Main Street designation back in 2015, Schuller also served as the first president of the local board and has remained involved throughout the years.

With a commitment to see downtown Grundy Center grow and thrive, he and his wife Joan personally worked to restore a building in downtown Grundy Center, which is now home to one local business - 319 Decor and Design - and the town’s only AirBNB location: Clocktower Suites.

“We’re honored to have John’s consistent commitment to our program and community,” said MSGC Director Lisa Bienfang. “His guidance is instrumental, and not only is he a volunteer but he walks the walk instead of just talking the talk by personally investing in improvements to our community. He and Joan’s building is a keystone in our redevelopment efforts downtown.”
