Spartan boys tennis start 2-0

WAVERLY – Nick Voss got on the bus and hugged his teammates in celebration.

Voss, a junior that plays No. 1 singles and doubles on Grundy Center's boys tennis team didn't get a win of his own against Waverly-Shell Rock last Thursday, but the Spartans beat the Go-Hawks for the first time in nearly a decade, and the Spartan junior knew what that meant for a program that rode an infusion of freshman talent to a 6-3 win in Waverly.

It was the first time the Spartans had defeated the Go-Hawks since 2010, and the first time GC had won a single match from W-SR since 2014.

Grundy Center added a 9-0 win over Hampton-Dumont/CAL on Monday.

Singles winners against the Go-Hawks included Cale Hendricks, Landon Graham, Dayne Zinkula and Brayden Sawyer. The doubles teams of Graham and Zinkula and Sawyer and Sloan Klar also won their matches.

Grundy Center coach Dale Boren appreciated Voss, one of his upperclassmen leaders along with senior Graham, putting the team's triumph ahead of his own.

"He reminded me a lot of Sage [Klar, last year's senior at No. 1], and that's what I was hoping to see from him this year," Boren said. "He was upset that he had lost, but when he found out we'd won the match, it wasn't about him winning, it was about the team."
